Engineering Video Resume: How to Stand Out From 90% of Engineers in 2026
Hey guys, today we’re going to talk about an important and relevant topic - the video resume. Why do you need one, how do you create it properly, and does it replace a traditional paper resume?
My name is Alex. I’m a UK Chartered Engineer, a European Engineer, and a certified career coach for engineers.
Why Video Resumes Are Becoming Relevant
We live in an era of rapid digitalization, where video content has become an integral part of our lives. Every day, millions of people watch videos on social media, YouTube, Instagram, and many other platforms. And right now, you’re watching this video as well, which clearly proves my point.
However, when it comes to resumes, I believe we are still a little behind the curve. While almost every aspect of our lives is going digital, resumes are still mostly presented in a traditional format - a text document created in Microsoft Word or on specialized platforms like EngineerNow.
Yes, changes are happening, but they are moving very slowly. Some platforms already offer the option to create a video resume, and there are even specialized websites fully dedicated to video resumes. Despite these innovations, the adaptation process remains extremely slow.
The Future of Resumes
I’m confident that in the near future, paper resumes will become a thing of the past. It’s quite possible that in a few years the standard practice will be to send a link or a QR code to your LinkedIn profile or another website featuring your portfolio and video resume.
Although that future isn’t here yet, you already have a great opportunity to stand out from the competition with a video resume. This format not only allows you to present information about yourself, but also to do it in a more creative way, showcasing your personality and professionalism.
If you want to stay ahead of your colleagues and other job seekers, a video resume is an excellent way to do it.
Resume Screening and the EngineerNow Platform
Sending hundreds of resumes and not getting any response is a common problem. EngineerNow is a platform for creating resumes for engineers of all professions. The most crucial aspect of a technical specialist’s resume is professional skills.
On the EngineerNow platform, technical skills and competencies for almost all engineering professions have been manually selected, and you can add them to your resume with just one click. In today’s world, most companies use AI algorithms to screen resumes, so even the format of your resume matters during the selection process. EngineerNow uses formats that have been tested over the years on hundreds of engineers. Use what truly works.
As a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) and Certified Digital Career Strategist (CDCS) who has conducted over 200 technical interviews, I clearly see how automated screening systems and recruiters evaluate resumes today. Structure, clarity, and relevance matter more than ever, and video resumes are gradually becoming part of this evaluation process.
How to Create a Professional Video Resume
When creating your video resume, keep a few important things in mind. Be mindful of what you show in the video and the images you use. For example, avoid topics related to LGBT or any safety violations, such as standing under a suspended load, working at height without a safety harness, or performing tasks without a hard hat or safety glasses.
Your video resume should highlight your professional qualities and be fully aligned with the industry you work in. If you’re an engineer, your video resume should be structured and technically sound, focusing on your technical skills, experience, and professional achievements.
As a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng) and Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) with more than 17 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, I know that employers pay close attention to safety mindset, professionalism, and technical discipline. Your video resume should reinforce these qualities, not undermine them.
At the same time, it’s important to understand how a hiring manager actually consumes this content: a video resume works best as a complement to your CV and cover letter, not a replacement, helping a recruiter or hiring manager quickly differentiate you from other candidates. If you decide to make a video, make sure it is concise, relevant, and aligned with the role, especially for client-facing roles where communication and presentation matter. When you make your video resume, consider using it strategically — for example, attaching a link when applying online or sharing it after initial contact — as this often leads to more interviews by strengthening the overall impression. A well-prepared video allows a hiring manager to see your confidence, clarity, and motivation upfront, which can significantly increase your chances of moving forward compared to candidates who rely only on traditional formats.
And here is a good video resume of one of the participants of my Engineer-Millionaire Course:
Video Resume and the Engineer Millionaire Course
By the way, in my EngineerMillionaire course, there is a dedicated module where I explain in detail how to create a professional video resume for engineers. In this module, I cover all the technical aspects of video resumes and provide examples of successful video resumes created by participants of our program.
Why Video Resumes Matter
Video resumes are a growing trend, and they’re worth paying attention to. While the adaptation process is slow, and I’m not saying that everyone should rush to create one immediately, I’m confident that in the near future a video resume will become an essential part of job applications.
A video resume gives you a unique opportunity to present yourself to employers in a different way. It allows you to showcase not only your professional skills, but also your personality, motivation, and creativity. This is especially important in today’s job market, where employers are looking for more than just qualified specialists. They want professionals who can think outside the box, adapt to change, and bring innovative ideas to the table.
If you want to stay ahead and achieve career success, a video resume can be a powerful tool to help you reach your goals. It’s an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, and you shouldn’t miss it.
