Do I need a cover letter?
Depends on the application system.
If the job application has a cover letter field or specifically asks for one → yes, write one.
Keep it focused: 3 short paragraphs, maximum 250 words.
● Paragraph 1: Why this specific company and role
● Paragraph 2: One project that demonstrates your ability to deliver results
● Paragraph 3: What you're eager to learn and contribute
If there's no cover letter field and the job description doesn't mention it → skip it and invest that time in tailoring your resume to highlight the most relevant skills for the role.

How often should I update my resume?
Every time you finish a project or internship.
Don't wait until you're actively applying for jobs. Update it immediately while the details are fresh in your memory:
● What tools and technologies did you use?
● What was the scale? (data volume, processing speed, number of records)
● What improved? (efficiency gains, reduced errors, faster response times)
● What impact did your work have on the team or project?
Future you will thank present you for documenting these accomplishments when the details are still clear. It's much harder to recall specific metrics and technologies six months later when you're trying to apply for roles.
PDF or Word doc?
PDF. Unless—and this is important—the job application explicitly says “upload as .docx” or “Word format only.” In that case, follow instructions.
